What air quality testing tells you and what it does not
Indoor air quality testing in Lubbock answers one specific question well: is the mold spore load inside this building meaningfully different from the air outside it? That comparison is the whole point. Mold spores exist in normal outdoor air everywhere, including over the cotton fields and playa lakes of the South Plains. A raw indoor number by itself means nothing.
What testing does not do is diagnose anyone's health. We are a remediation company. If people in the house are sick, that is a physician's job. What we can do is tell you whether the building is contributing, and where.
We also will not test you into a job. If mold is visible and you already know the source, testing usually adds cost without changing the plan. We say so.
When testing is worth the money
- Symptoms with no visible cause. Coughing, congestion, headaches, or asthma flare-ups that improve when the family leaves the house for a few days.
- A smell you cannot find. Musty odor with nothing visible. Air sampling plus cavity sampling narrows the search before any demolition.
- After a water event. A burst pipe from a freeze, a roof leak after hail, or a slab leak that ran for a while. Testing confirms whether drying was actually adequate.
- Buying a house. An option period is short. Test data beats an argument about a stain.
- Landlord and tenant disputes. Third-party numbers settle it faster than either side's opinion.
- Post-remediation clearance. On a regulated Texas project this is mandatory and must be performed by an independent licensed assessor.
- Commercial and employee complaints. When multiple people in one building report the same symptoms, documentation matters legally as well as practically.
How the sampling works
Outdoor control first
Every credible indoor air sample is paired with an outdoor sample collected the same day, in the same weather. On a windy West Texas afternoon with dust in the air, outdoor spore counts can be very high. Without that baseline, an indoor number is uninterpretable. Anyone who samples your house and skips the outdoor control is not giving you usable data.
Indoor samples
A calibrated pump draws a measured volume of air through a spore trap cassette over a set period. We generally sample the complaint area, a nearby unaffected room for comparison, and the return air stream if the HVAC system is suspected. Doors and windows stay closed for a period beforehand so the sample reflects the building, not the street.
Cavity samples
A small probe hole into a wall or ceiling cavity draws a sample from inside the assembly. This is how you confirm a hidden problem without demolition, and it is often the deciding test on a suspected slab-leak wall.
Surface samples
Tape lifts or swabs on visible growth to identify what it is and document it.
Reading the results
The lab returns spore counts by genus for each sample. What we look at is the relationship between them: is the indoor count significantly above the outdoor control, and are the indoor genera different from what is outside? Indoor-dominant genera like Stachybotrys, Chaetomium, and elevated Aspergillus and Penicillium are the ones that point to an active indoor water problem rather than spores that blew in the door.
Lubbock-specific things that skew results
Dust storms and wind
Sustained winds here average in the mid-teens and the region sees haboobs and blowing dust events. Sampling during or right after a dust event produces enormous outdoor counts and elevated indoor counts from infiltration. We note weather conditions on every report and, when it matters, we reschedule.
Evaporative coolers
A swamp cooler pulls large volumes of outdoor air through wet pads and pushes it into the house. That means outdoor spores get carried in continuously, and the pads themselves can be a growth site. If the cooler is running, sampling has to account for it. Sometimes the correct recommendation is simply to service the cooler.
Agricultural dust
Lubbock County sits in the middle of one of the largest cotton-producing areas in the country. During harvest and field prep, outdoor spore and particulate loads shift. Again, this is why the outdoor control matters.
Attic HVAC systems
When the air handler and ducts are in an unconditioned attic, attic air quality becomes indoor air quality through duct leakage. If sampling shows elevated counts at the return but not in the rooms, that points at the system, not the walls.
Clearance testing after remediation
Clearance is the test that proves the job worked. It is performed with containment still up and the air scrubbers off for a set period, so the sample measures the finished condition rather than a filtered one.
On a regulated Texas project, meaning contamination affecting 25 contiguous square feet or more, clearance is not optional and it must be done by an independent licensed Mold Assessment Consultant, not by the remediation contractor. That separation is written into the state's rules for a reason. Once clearance passes, the assessment consultant issues a Certificate of Mold Damage Remediation, which under Texas law is a document you want in your file when you sell the property or talk to an insurer.
On a smaller unregulated job, clearance testing is optional. We recommend it when someone in the home has a respiratory condition, when the job was in a bedroom or nursery, or when the property is about to be sold.
Testing we do not recommend
Some things get sold as air quality testing that we think are a poor use of your money in this market.
Mycotoxin testing. Expensive, hard to interpret, and rarely changes the remediation plan. Removal is the same regardless.
Home store settle plates. A petri dish left open on a counter will grow mold in almost any house, because normal indoor air contains spores. There is no measured air volume and no control, so the result cannot be compared to anything.
Whole-house ERMI-style dust tests, used alone. They have research applications, but as a stand-alone consumer diagnostic they generate alarming-looking scores without telling you where the problem is or whether there even is one.
Testing when the answer is already obvious. Visible growth on a wall under a known leak does not need a lab to confirm it. Spend that money on the repair.

What makes Lubbock indoor air different
Indoor air quality testing on the South Plains has to account for things a coastal lab report will not flag. We take that into consideration when we interpret results, because raw spore counts without local context can send you chasing the wrong problem.
Dust is the baseline
Lubbock is a dusty place. Blowing dust events from late winter through spring are routine, and in a high-wind year the fine particulate load in a house is genuinely high. Dust irritates airways on its own, and a family that assumes they have a mold problem sometimes has a filtration problem instead. That distinction matters, because one costs a filter upgrade and the other costs a remediation.
Outdoor spore counts are seasonal here
Agriculture drives the outdoor spore profile across the South Plains. Cotton harvest, field turnover and the burn of a dry summer all change what is in the outside air, which is exactly why a same-day outdoor control sample is not optional. Comparing indoor counts against an outdoor control taken at a different time of year is meaningless.

Pads that have been sitting damp between uses grow their own colonies, and the cooler then distributes them. Attic-mounted HVAC spreads whatever is up there
With the air handler and ducts in the attic, any leak in the return pulls attic air into the system and delivers it to every room. That is the usual explanation for a house that smells musty everywhere and nowhere in particular. Sampling supply air at multiple registers finds it.
What a testing appointment looks like
- Walk-through and history. Symptoms, timing, recent leaks, hail, freeze events, roof work, and whether anyone feels better away from the house.
- Outdoor control sample. Taken the same day, on the same equipment, upwind of the building.
- Indoor samples. Typically the room of concern, a central living area, and any room with suspected growth. More rooms if the house is large or the complaint is whole-house.
- Surface samples where appropriate. Tape lift or swab on visible growth or suspect staining.
- Moisture and temperature readings in every sampled room, because spore counts without moisture data do not tell you where to look.
- Independent lab analysis. Results usually back within a few business days, rush available.
- A report you can use, written in plain language with what the numbers mean and what we recommend doing about them.
When testing is worth paying for
Somebody in the house has ongoing respiratory symptoms and you need data. You smell something and cannot find it. You are buying a house and the disclosure mentions past water damage. You are a landlord or a tenant and you need third-party documentation. You just had remediation and you want independent clearance. Or your insurer is asking for supporting evidence.
If you can see the growth, you know where the water came from, and you already plan to remove it, testing tells you very little that changes the work. Spend the money on the removal instead. We will say that to your face rather than sell you a sample.
Common Questions About Indoor Air Quality Testing
What is a normal mold spore count indoors?
There is no single legal or federal threshold, which surprises people. The standard used in practice is comparative: indoor counts should be at or below the outdoor control taken the same day, and the indoor genus profile should look like the outdoor one. When indoor counts run well above outdoor, or when indoor-dominant genera show up that are not outside, that indicates an indoor source.
How much does air quality testing cost?
Pricing is per sample plus the lab fee, and a typical residential job involves an outdoor control plus a small number of indoor samples. We quote the exact number before we collect anything, and the initial consultation and walk-through is free.
How long until I get results?
Standard lab turnaround is usually two to five business days. Rush analysis is available for an additional fee when a real estate deadline or a health situation requires it.
Can testing tell me if the mold is making my family sick?
No. Testing tells you what is in the air of the building. Whether a person's symptoms are caused by that is a medical question for a physician, ideally one who has the test results in hand. We provide the building data. We do not diagnose people.
Should I test before I buy a house in Lubbock?
Not automatically. Test when there is a reason: a musty smell, a documented leak history, hail damage to the roof, visible staining, or something a general inspector flagged. On a house with no indicators, your inspection money is usually better spent on the roof, the foundation, and the plumbing.
My air purifier says the air is fine. Is that good enough?
Consumer air quality monitors read particulate matter and sometimes VOCs. They do not identify or count mold spores, and they cannot tell a mold spore from cotton dust or road grit, of which there is plenty here. They are useful for general awareness. They are not a mold test.
